enjoying olympic coverage

I actually think NBC is doing a rather decent job thus far. And I have 3 HD channels covering it (NBC HD, USA HD, and UHD). I get all my mainstream sports on NBC, and can also flip over to USA or UHD to grab some of the obscure ones (handball, sabre, badminton… Badminton is simply awesome, btw). The road race was awesome to watch… One of the few times the cameras will traverse the countryside....

kde 4.1

I’ve been checking up on the progress of KDE 4 using the Kubuntu member repository as it moved through various betas and a few days ago the official 4.1 release moved in. While it obviously lacks the many years of polish that went into KDE3, at this point its basically mature enough that I’m now using it as my full time desktop. Many of the applications do not yet have KDE4 versions available, but you can seamlessly run their KDE3 counterparts in the KDE4 desktop....

Lessig's Change Congress Keynote

His focus has improved dramatically since is first “beta” version of his keynote. I think this effort is moving in the right direction and I’m going to go and check how many people from congress they’ve managed to pledge. I think the first “chorus” (if you will) is too temperamental to rally around, but I completely agree with the second.

family albums

I uploaded some of my parents pictures (since they weren’t about to do it themselves =) These aren’t my photos, but deserves some exposure, none the less. First set is from Ken & Angel’s AIDS Ride from SF to LA. A really impressive feat, and I’m really tempted to train for it next year. Second set is the family trip to Hawaii over the 4th of July, which unfortunately we couldn’t tag along....

running 'round today

Pretty amazing that two weeks on the iPhone is still so scarce. We strolled by the Apple store in PA around noon and it was already sold out for the day (they apparently handed out claim tickets to avoid having a long line). I don’t have the patience to do more than just walk into a store and pick one up. My guess is it will probably be another two weeks before the supply meets up with the demand....

oh the irony

Most of the major efforts have appeared to die down – It looks like things might go off without much of a protest. But I guess we’ll see. I highly recommend you check out this link. Some of the new buildings juxtaposed with the ancient and industrial, it looks like something out of a science fiction metropolis!

pocket video

I didn’t jump at the Flip Mino because when you get down to it, the quality is still VGA @ 30fps – basically not much more than you’re standard web cam. Yes, it was nice and tiny and more importantly, cheap. But it still didn’t pop out. You can now get MiniDV or hard drive based high definition camcorders now at somewhat reasonable prices, but still steep. This August, Kodak is releasing their Zi6, which might finially tip the scales....
