Transition with Wine/Crossover

Wine is the open source Windows emulator program for Linux – A very handy thing to have working well if you ever want to make the transition. I have already determined that when I put together my next desktop which will hopefully be some time next year, I will run Kubuntu (If any of this sounds familiar, I already blogged about it =) Cossover Office is a program put out by Codeweavers that is based on Wine....

Lost -- Season 1 Review

Yes, yes, I know this is just a tad late, but I finally got around to watching the series. First of all, let me get a few points out of the way. Comercial-less box set TV shows is really the only way to watch quality programs like this. I did the same with Battlestar Galactica, Firefly, and now Lost. You quickly realize that each episode is infinitely better with out the interruptions of commercials every 10 minutes or so....

value of offsite backups

The fire alarm went off last night, and instead of being a quick leave-the-building-shut-off-the-alarm-go-back routine, an impressive array of firetrucks (complete with a ladder being raised to the roof of our building) greeted us outside. Thankfully it didn’t turn into anything serious. Apparently there was a gas leak on the eighth floor (Ann & I are on the sixth), so they brought in fans to try to clear everything out. However something jumped out at me as we were waiting for everything to clear – in case of a real fire, we’d be pretty screwed....

Little Miss Sunshine

This is such a fantastic movie, and really shows (I think) where the industry is going with film – smaller, independent productions with quality actors. The recent success of films by Liongate Films and Fox Searchlight seems to be catching on. With the success of 40-Year-Old Virgin, Steve Carell’s stock has been soaring. In Sunshine though, he stretches his acting even further, and I was tremendously impressed. His character is complex, emotionally scarred, but still has the little bit of wit and humor we know Carell possesses....

This is the Colbert Report

If you watch one 30 second video today… it must this one. If you watched the August 8th show, then you caught a glimpse of it.

Space Shuttle Discovery

STS-121 – Shuttle Discovery (download video) As disappointed as I am with what NASA has done (or more accurately, hasn’t done) since the 80’s, there is still something awe inspiring about moving men and women into space, that I don’t believe will ever get old. I am someone that can still watch Apollo 13 over and over because of the triumph that it represents. Unfortunately, the bureaucracy at NASA and the lack of foresight and funding from Congress has relegated the one great United States Space Program to an after thought… A political liability… And probably many other things that don’t get revealed to the general public....

World Cup (Part 4)

Quarter Finals Germany 1 - Argentina 1 (Germany wins on PK) Fantastic! Just what was billed. Germany has shown they have the fortitude to continue on, especially continuing to attack and find the equalizer late in the second half. I’m not sure what the end scuffle was all about… I didn’t read anything about it here, but I’m sure the German papers covered it. Since I’ve been watching all the matches via DVR, I skip all the pre-game and halftime analysis, so I don’t know if it was covered then....

Question

Anyone who isn’t a full fledged computer nut (or someone who does this for a living… I at least fit both categories) can move on to some of my other posts below (World Cup Part 3 for example). However, if you aren’t phased, please continue. Why has no one done a one to one port of the extensive Java libraries to C++? I know there is Boost which is basically an advanced extension to the C++ standard library, but wouldn’t you think it would be worth while to have a 1 to 1 port where you didn’t need to think about different syntax, the function and behavior was the same (or as close as you can get in C++ while still concerning yourself with memory management)....

Delicious Linkroll -- Canvas Plugin

My little contribution to the Canvas community. This plugin uses the Del.icio.us javascript link roll interface to display your del.icio.us links as a block in Canvas. Download Updated 6.30.06 Download it here: delicious_v1.zip Installation Simply unzip the two files into your wp-content/plugins/Canvas/plugins directory, and then go to Block Management and rescan. The block is filed under Services. Click on the block properties to set your login, and customize its appearance. I’ve wrapped the javascript call in a div class=“delicious” to give you a bit more control over how its displayed in your blog....

World Cup (Part 3)

Round of 16 As we conclude Group Play and almost conclude the knock out round, a bit of reflection is in order before we get to the recaps. I personally don’t like FIFA’s blanket stance on trying to cut down on aggressive play with the abundance of yellow/red cards. There have been two refs that I’ve noted that area really good – the first transgression they take the player aside and issue a warning, and then only after repeated offenses or really dangerous tackles do you issue a yellow....
