happy new year

Family @ Northstar, originally uploaded by griphiam. While skiing was a week too early (the big storm is just hitting now), it was fun to actually ski after a two year hiatus. Really needed about 6-12 more inches to actually get complete coverage – we’ll get that and much more this weekend. I’ve decided to go with a flickr account for my photo album. I’ve been seduced by its user interface (and most of the other perks, even though its an extra $2 a month for it)....

worlds worst (but best stories)

It may take you a while, but start making your way through these stories in the comments. Genuinely laugh-out-loud funny and some totally unbelievable!

tf2 -- statistical heaven

At a minimum, you need to check out the “Death Heat Maps” at the bottom of this page. The rest of the data is pretty interesting too, and really shows how balanced all the characters are. I think based on the stats, the Engineer is slightly behind the rest, and I’m surprised the Demoman and Pyro aren’t ‘higher’. The other really interesting piece is the stat right above the Death Heat maps – Round win % per team per map....

wonderful world of pixar

The more obvious ones I got, but the sheer expanse of tie-ins to other projects is really remarkable! Additionally, I’m very excited for the WALL-E movie… I’m hoping it continue the quality production and story that Ratatouille ushered in. The crew they have going there and the consistency of the story telling as almost usurped Disney completely. I know it was a different era and basically different medium (hand-drawn cell art vs....

down time for the holidays

Talk about a busy time… Sorry there hasn’t been much by way of updates. Things are a little crazy at the moment (as well as nothing I really feel strongly about opining on). Enjoy the holidays!

writers on strike... what to do?

You know what this means right? More Survivor, American Idol, Amazing Race… Reality TV! [Shudder] Its going to be bad folks. In addition, the contracts for Director’s Guild and Actor’s Guild are due up in June! The hope is that the work that goes into the WGA contract can be applied to the DGA and AGA. Technically we’re still in the first week, but the repeated breakdowns in progress doesn’t exactly lend to optimism....

Oh… My… God…

why we |should| do it

For whatever reason, I am often posed the following question… “Why should we continue to fund space exploration? Why should we continue to fund NASA?” Neil Tyson breaks it down pretty succinctly (and editorialized over at BA). The ready response I’ve developed for myself parallels their arguments fairly well. However, the answer I always want to use is… “Why not?” However that never seems to go over very well. You can at least accurately shoot down anyone with a notion that the space program is “expensive” or is a “waste of our tax dollars....

new punctuation needed

There needs to be a new version of the “double quote.” One that conveys, not that I’m quoting someone or some text, but the equivalent to the “air quote” or “this is a concept that I’m emphasizing by enclosing it in quotations” quote. Bottom line is that anyone who taught grammar would probably slap me upside the head and say, “No.”

lessig's new career

About a month ago now, Lessig rebooted his career. Once the champion of copyright reform and founder of the Creative Commons (where he will still have a role), he has now decided to focus on “corruption.” Corruption not in the sense of blatant bribery, and the stereotypical corruption prevalent a few generations ago (though still occasionally still peeks its shunned head out once in a while). I think he has correctly defined the problem to be the “undo influence of money in political, scientific, corporate, legal, medical (et al) decision making....
