lessons from pirates

Old link, but I’m still trying to catch up… Mark hit the nail on the head here… Though I think the blame is shared between the retailers and the content owners, this is more to do with retailers than the latter. But there is a new world emerging… Streaming Video. And I’m not talking about digital downloads – I’m talking about things similar to what NBC does with its shows*....

google design

I hadn’t thought about it this way, but this is a good overview of the influence Google’s search algorithms have on web design. After seeing this, you’ll start to see the sheer number of websites that follow the same model/design… and this can all be traced back to Google! Such ugly, cluttered designs too. Another thing that is troublesome is that Google’s algorithm doesn’t really play nice with Web 2.0 (Ajax, Flash, etc), where the data is no longer displayed in HTML that can be parsed by a bot, but rendered on the client....

gutsy gibson

[K]ubuntu 7.10 was released today. This will be my first attempt at a serious linux upgrade (which is complicated by the fact that I’m not running a vanilla Feisty at the moment). So we’ll see how this process goes. (Backup, backup, backup) Gutsy has a lot of great stuff in it – Built in compiz, restricted driver management that (supposedly) works, Dolphin as default file manager, new debian package manager, and more....

Scotty down Pegg[ed]

“She can’t take much more captain! I’m giving her all she’s got! We need to get to the Winchester!” From the “that suddenly improved the stakes” department comes news that JJ Abrams remake of Star Trek picked up Simon Pegg (Hot Fuzz, Shawn of the Dead) to play Scotty! Yes, they are going back to the original characters with a whole new cast and basically remaking the Star Trek universe. They also recently picked up Eric Bana to play the villain!...

Portal (initial)

The cake is a lie… What a fantastic game! Original and great fun (I chose to beat it over playing TF2!) Little too short, but there looks to be some extras (as well as downloadable) maps… I can’t wait to replay it, actually. And Jonathan Coulton is my hero! (And I’m still alive…)

team fortress 2 (initial)

Oh… My… God. Absolutely and utterly fantastic. (more on this later, but in all likelihood, much later as game play comes first!)

documentation

<rant> If you are going to document your software/middle-ware/project… hell anything, it does no good to document values without telling us what those values are!! For example, if you have a java configuration file, and the property is something like system.important.function And your documentation says that the possible values are foo|bar|nuts Without telling us the behavior differences of each value, you’ve screwed up. Documentation is not self documenting damnit! </rant>

identity 2.0

While the subject matter is quite interesting, and very applicable to the times, take a look at this presentation. That is how a powerpoint presentation is done – maybe not quite that rapid fire, but the style and substance (based on the Lessig presentation model) is incredibly well done. Its really sad how Powerpoint’s tools and layouts encourage the worst aspects of presentations (lots of text, read from the slide, etc)....

Grand Canyon (part 1)

Well I know its been a long wait, but I’m finally getting around to processing all those pictures taken in the last 4 months. Expect quite a bit of new stuff coming soon. We’ll start with two great panorama vistas: The first taken at the ‘Grand View’ vista point and the second taken at the ‘Desert View’ tower. Remember, these are really scaled down (the full size posted in the gallery is 25% of the original, so the detail in the full size is remarkable – click on the title to head to the gallery page)....

games|art

The debate on whether video games could be art has been held at a low simmer for quite some time. Roger Ebert threw down the gauntlet on which many picked up, including recently Clive Barker, who stirred the pot again. In what I deem is a “final thought” on this issue, Ragnar Tournquist (of Dreamfall fame) invited Wayne Santos to deliver a very well written essay on the state of the question “can video games be art?...
